Did he/she really said that? #DBW2019

Sipping on our favorite drink – Campari Soda when suddenly, a man beside me asked me..

I think everyone who has diabetes has got and will receive comments about why they were diagnosed with diabetes, how it should be treated in the best way, what type of food is best suited, etc. The list goes on. These comments are often due to misunderstanding and ignorance.

It is not clear what causes diabetes, but it occurs when the immune system incorrectly attacks the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. This causes damage and prevents the pancreas from producing insulin properly. Type 1 diabetes also has a genetic component.

That being said, I want to tell you about a comment / question I received when I sat at a super-nice restaurant in the old town of Ibiza this summer with my dad. We talked about life while sipping on our favorite drink, campari soda. Beside us sat two elderly men and seemed to enjoy exactly the same environment, drink and company as we.

All of a sudden one man turns around and asks in a shaky English dialect:

“What you have on your arm there, is it a GPS? If so, I’m in need of one for my wife, thou she has an incredibly lousy local sense and I would desperately want a GPS on her so she does not get lost.”

I burst out in laughter and couldn’t help but tell him what it actually was – a cgm which through Bluetooth on my phone shows my blood sugar. I have type 1 diabetes.

Both men became fascinated and wanted to hear more about diabetes. I know after many questions and comments about my diabetes that it does not help to sound angry or be saucy. The best thing is to explain in simple words what diabetes is, and that life is not as simple as eating more cinnamon, stopping eating sweets and just eating salad.

In retrospect, I can’t stop thinking about how good it would be to have a GPS. Like his wife, I have an incredibly miserable local sense and despite smartphones, there is a risk that I will still end up in the wrong location.

Old town in Ibiza! Love this place!
